Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

How TMS therapy works

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain responsible for mood regulation. It is safe, drug-free, and performed as an outpatient treatment — no sedation required.

TMS has been researched for over 30 years, is TGA-approved in Australia, and has been Medicare-funded since 2021. It offers long-lasting benefits with no known long-term side effects.

Non-Invasive

No surgery, no anaesthesia. Sit comfortably in a chair during each session.

Drug-Free

An effective alternative for patients who haven't responded to medication or cannot tolerate side effects.

Outpatient

Sessions typically take 20–40 minutes. Continue your normal daily activities immediately after.

Yes — TMS is Medicare bulk-billed for eligible patients who have a current depressive episode and have trialled at least two antidepressant medications. A referral from a GP or psychiatrist is required.
A standard course is typically 20–30 sessions over 4–6 weeks, depending on your protocol. Accelerated protocols can compress this to 1–2 weeks.
Most patients experience only a mild tapping or clicking sensation on the scalp during treatment. It is well-tolerated and you can drive yourself to and from appointments.
TMS is TGA-approved for depression in Australia and is also used for anxiety, PTSD, OCD, auditory hallucinations, tinnitus, and chronic pain.
Studies show TMS successfully treats more than 70% of treatment-resistant depression patients — compared to only a 10% benefit from trialling a 4th antidepressant.
